• Ecofriendly, Sustainable, Recycled, Local, Organic. Materials used in remodels are increasingly reflecting lifestyle choices in our kitchens. From low VOC paints and sustainably harvested materials like bamboo, recycled glass countertops, and locally made products are all rapidly gaining ground in North Texas.

• Muted earth tones and neutrals. Reflecting the organic trend, popular colors are turning towards natural neutrals like soft grays and camels, with pops of color from muted jewel tones.

• Smart Homes. Leading the future wave is the incorporation of an ever-expanding use of gadgets and appliances that are smart phone enabled. Users can now control sound systems, HVAC, lighting and security systems remotely, and smart refrigerators, grills, ovens, and just about anything you can imagine are either here or coming soon. Flat screen and high-speed wiring are great updates to consider.

• Wallpaper. Wallpaper is making a comeback in a big way with bold, larger patterns and as a way to add visual interest to a wall or room.

• Clean, tailored lines. Gone are overstuffed chairs, slouchy pillows and oversized sofas. Furniture, curtains, and accessories are streamlined and often boxy or reflecting art deco-style curves.

• Designer/unique lighting. Think sculptural, handcrafted or artisanal light fixtures. In lighting, trends range from tight, tailored lines to organic free-flowing and unexpected.

• Frameless, walk in showers. Ditch the brass surround once and for all. A clean, streamlined shower is a soothing way to start the day and offers a lot of bang for the buck in a room that doesn’t usually have a lot of focal points.

• Make a statement. Statement pieces, such as a free-standing tub, artisanal hand crafted table, interesting or unexpected finishes on the ceiling, walls, floors, or an unusual front door, are becoming more important. A really interesting focal point in a room is complemented by simpler furnishings in the rest of the space.

• Small spaces and space saving features. The interest in tiny homes is reflected in a greater emphasis of making the most of the space you have. You’ll see more built-ins, like book cases under the stairs, a wine cellar wall, murphy beds, mounted folding tables and other dynamic pieces, like mounted folding screens that hide AV Equipment or as room dividers.

• Outdoor living focal point. Outdoor spaces are as important as indoor spaces, and increasingly this focal point is a fire pit or outdoor fireplace. Surrounded by a grouping of lounge chairs, benches or swings, a great outdoor space can be a best bet for unwinding and unplugging and makes the most of down time.
